XP Firewall Commander is an easy to use control interface for your Windows XP built-in firewall. It lets you add and remove exceptions for programs and services, so that they can receive inbound traffic.

In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Firewall is turned on by default (However, some computer manufacturers and network administrators might turn it off) for all network interfaces in order to help improve network protection for new Windows XP installations and Windows XP upgrades. In addition windows Firewall helps to improve protection for new network connections.

Imagine a situation when someone on the internet or a network tries to connect to your computer. We call that attempt an “unsolicited request”. When your computer gets an unsolicited request like this, Windows Firewall blocks the connection.

For examples, when you run a program such as an instant messaging program or a multiplayer network game that needs to receive information from the internet or a network, the firewall asks if you want to block or unblock (allow) the connection. If you choose to unblock the connection, Windows Firewall creates an exception so that the firewall won’t bother you when that program needs to receive information via the network in the future.

  • The Firewall Status area permits you to instantly turn on / off the firewall. This feature should be used whenever you want to block all inbound connections to your computer. Turning the firewall ON gives you a good protection against internet security threats such as worms, port scans and remote exploit attempts.
  • Track the firewall activity using the View Traffic tab. This feature comes as a bonus feature. You can get an instant view of the real time security activity that threatens your computer by monitoring the firewall log.
